Matt Smith Suffered ‘Serious Injury’ During Game of Thrones Prequel

As game of thrones before that, HBO’s upcoming prequel series Dragon House has a huge cast. The biggest name in the cast is probably Matt Smith, who played the Eleventh Doctor on Doctor Who as well as Prince Phillip in The crown. He plays Daemon Targaryen, the violent and ambitious younger brother of King Viserys I Targaryen (Paddy Considine). It’s a juicy role, and I can’t wait to see what Smith brings to it.

Perhaps because he’s so famous, some fans had a problem casting Smith in this key role, but according to The Hollywood Reporter, the producers were intrigued by her “uncanny androgynous quality”, which Smith may or may not take as a compliment, I don’t know. “Matt is really the only person we talked about,” said showrunner Ryan Condal Geek’s Lair. “We would say, ‘Like a Matt Smith or a Matt Smith type’ when we talk about Daemon. I just loved his work on The crown as Prince Philip, who is somewhat ironically a similar character. He is second fiddle, in this case to the Queen of England, his own wife, and he is a little adrift. [Daemon] is also a bit of a rogue prince trying to find his place and place in the world.

Matt was an incredibly accomplished actor who had played this very wide range of roles and was always doing different and interesting things. We loved how she looked, and we loved picturing her in this platinum blonde Targaryen wig, sitting on a dragon. When we met him, we got along really well creatively, and he brought a lot of interesting layers of pathos and psychology to the character that I think makes Daemon one of the most fully realized characters in George’s Westerosi universe.

Matt Smith wants to “subvert” his Dragon House character

Smith seems to have taken the role eagerly. “On the page, Daemon could really be a thing,” he said. THR. “I’ve always been interested in trying to subvert him a bit into something else. I think there’s a kind of weird, sensitive nature to Daemon and a real loyalty to him and humanistic qualities that you can withdraw and see.

But Daemon is also a warrior, which means Smith was involved in some action scenes, both in melee and in the air when Daemon rides his dragon Caraxes. During a stunt, he suffered this THR called “a serious injury” to a disc in his neck. He continued filming despite the pain, and gave this interview on his way to physical therapy months after filming wrapped. “It’s a fucking pain in the neck – literally, physically and metaphorically,” Smith said.

Hopefully there aren’t any lingering effects, both for Smith’s sake and because Daemon has an important role to play in this series going forward.

Viserys I Targaryen is “a good man but an evil king” on Dragon House

Paddy Considine, who plays Daemon’s older brother, the King, also chimed in for THR. “He’s a good man,” Considine said of his character, “but a bad king in the sense that he tries to please everyone.” Sounds like a recipe for peace and quiet.

We’ll see these two in action when Dragon House premieres on HBO and HBO Max on August 21.
