James Corden apologizes after restaurant owner calls him ‘abusive’

On Monday, New York restaurateur Keith McNally bluntly called out James Corden in a damning Instagram Publish.

Sharing a photo of the British comedian with his 78,900 followers, Keith called James “a little moron of a man” and called him “the most abusive customer” at his restaurant Balthazar in 25 years of service.

Keith included two detailed reports from the manager about James’ behavior in his post and explained that he ’86’d’ him – which would mean he banned the comic from his restaurants.

“James Corden is an extremely gifted comedian, but a little moron of a man. And the most abusive customer to my servers Balthazar since the restaurant opened 25 years ago,” Keith’s post began. I don’t often 86’d a client, until today I 86’d Corden. It didn’t make me laugh.”

He then gave examples of James’ alleged treatment of wait staff, with the first incident occurring in June and the second less than two weeks ago on October 9.

Quoting the manager’s report, Keith wrote, “In June, James Corden was here at table 61. (While diabolical, it happens very occasionally in all restaurants.) After eating his main course, Corden showed the hair to Balthazar’s manager, G. who was very sorry.

“Corden was extremely mean to G and said, ‘Give us another round of drinks this second. And also take care of all our drinks so far. That way I write all the nasty reviews in yelp or something,” Keith concluded.

“James Corden was at Balthazar with his wife on October 9 for brunch,” the director’s second report began. “He asked for a table outside. Brunch Maitre D’ Allie Wolters took the party to table 301.”

“Mr. Corden’s wife ordered an egg yolk omelette with Gruyere cheese and salad. A few minutes after receiving the food, James called their server, MK and told him there was a little of egg white mixed with egg yolk,” he continued. “MK informed the floor manager, G. The kitchen redid the dish but unfortunately sent it with home fries instead. salad.”

“That’s when James Corden started yelling at the waiter like crazy, ‘You can’t do your job! You can’t do your job! Maybe I should go into the kitchen and make the omelet myself! MK apologized and brought G. to the table,” the report continued.

“He returned the dish, and after that, everything was fine. He gave them promotional champagne glasses to smooth things over,” he said. “G. said Corden was nice to him but mean to the waiter. MK was very shaken up, but professional as she is, continued to complete her shift.

Keith’s post quickly went viral with many people taking to social media to share their reaction to his claims. A tweet read: “I thought it had been common knowledge for years that James Corden is an absolute asshole.”

Another joked: ‘James Corden banned from Balthazar, then let’s do movie musical adaptations.’ And someone else wrote“If we could just ban James Corden from fucking absolutely everything, that would be awesome.”

Others began circulating past allegations about James’ behavior, as well as making their own claims against him.

And just six hours later Keith took to Instagram to reveal James had phoned him and ‘profusely apologised’ after seeing his message – and the restaurateur said he was ready to give another luck at comics.

“James Corden just called me and apologized profusely. Having screwed me over more than most people, I’m a firm believer in second chances,” Keith wrote. “So if James Corden lets me host his Late show for 9 months, I will immediately rescind his ban on Balthazar.

“No of course not. But… anyone magnanimous enough to apologize to a slacker like me (and my staff) does not deserve to be banned from anywhere,” he continued. “Especially Balthazar. So come back to 5 & Dime, Jimmy Corden, Jimmy Corden. All is forgiven. xx”

James has not publicly commented on Keith’s allegations.

The star first rose to fame in the UK as co-creator and one of the stars of the BBC sitcom Gavin and Staceybroadcast between 2007 and 2010.

He rose to prominence in the United States when he succeeded Craig Ferguson as host of The late show in 2015, which he will leave next year.

In a 2020 interview with the New YorkerJames admitted that after the runaway success of Gavin and Stacey he became “drunk” from fame and had to go to therapy to keep him from being “a kid”.

James revealed that friends and family called him out for his behavior at the time, including his Gavin and Stacey co-star Rob Brydon.

“I started acting like a kid that I just don’t think I was,” James recalled. “It’s so intoxicating, that first wave of fame. And I think it’s even more intoxicating if you’re not brought up for it.

The star then shared that his parents prayed for him and his sisters confronted him directly about being an “asshole”.

Rob also recalled talking to James about his behavior over lunch, telling the same publication: “I said, ‘Look, that’s a little awkward to say, but I just hear these things about you and you” I have to know that the way you behave has an effect on people.

James said he agreed he needed to make a change, and in his first session with a therapist he told them he “was a better person than that.”
