The following is an excerpt from an interview with Behavior Change Institute co-founder Kathleen Karimi, whose comments have been edited and condensed for length and clarity.
How has your organization’s culture helped you succeed over the past year?
“I think we’ve worked really hard to pick things up and kind of get back to where we were before COVID. Because COVID has disrupted everything, we have temporarily suspended many in-person engagement initiatives, many of our in-person community outreach initiatives and now that we are coming out of the woodwork a bit, we have been able to re-engage the community and start attending again in-person community events, reaching out to our community partners in person, and then bringing our staff together as well, which felt really, really good. Our staff have been able to get out there and engage in professional development in person so going back to conferences, seminars and still doing it online, but not as much, I think that’s really been a positive change for everyone and really helped address a lot of the general isolation that I think people were experiencing due to COVID. And then I think just celebrating our resilience because, even before COVID, we had telehealth services and telehealth technology integrated into almost all patient care. We were really proud of the fact that we were able to really pull together and continue to care for our patients in the best possible way. There were a lot of companies, I think, in our space that had to close sites, lay off employees – and we haven’t laid off a single employee through all the disruptions we faced during COVID.
How has your concept of supporting their work-life balance changed as an employer?
“So we’ve always offered remote positions, and that’s really allowed us to accommodate people at all stages of life. We have many people who work with us who have young children at home, so even before the pandemic we are proud to be able to offer an infant and child program at work which allows employees to work in certain functions. with their children present. Of course, with the pandemic and children out of school and in day care, we really had to modify our already existing program and expand it even more. And it really became clear to us how important it was to see each employee as an individual with unique needs and to work together to understand where the employee was coming from, what their needs were, and do whatever we could to be a supportive and not a stressor in an already stressful time. We have incorporated some – in 2020 and have continued this throughout this year – additional paid mental health days. These are days that we assign a few times a year and are flexible so employees don’t have to use paid time off or sick days if they just need a break.
